Welcome to the Home Page of Roses in View, a site designed to provide a taste of the variety and beauty to be found in the world of roses. It is intended primarily to provide an opportunity to browse a collection of photographs of roses old and new but it may also be used both to choose varieties for the garden and to help in the identification of cultivars which the visitor might know by sight but not by name.
The heart of the site is the section called An Alphabet of Roses, in which photographs of roses are listed alphabetically by cultivar name. The principles behind the selection and descriptions are explained on the first page of this section, where there are direct links to the pages for each letter from A to Z. These are followed by a checklist of names, with cross references where a rose is known by more than one name.
In the section called A Taxonomy of the Rose an attempt has been made to provide a brief description of the main characteristics which mark the genus rosa off from other flowering plants, the range of species which have been found and the way in which cultivated roses have evolved from their wild forebears.
An attempt has also been made to provide a forum where visitors to the site can seek help in identifying roses that may be growing in their gardens by sending photos and descriptions. It is hoped that others visiting Do you know this rose? will then be able to supply the answer.
I have also provided a Bibliography, which consists basically of a listing of the books that I have used in research for this site, and a selection of Other sites of interest to rose lovers.
